Can A Hot Water Heater Explode?

Can a hot water heater explode? If you have ever noticed dripping or heard unusual sounds coming from your hot water heater, this was likely your first thought because it is a safety risk that can be dangerous when in close contact. The higher the setting, the bigger the risk for burns, in which more than 300 children are treated in emergency rooms. More than one-hundred deaths are also reported from scalding hot water. While the recommended degree for a hot water heater is 120-degrees, homeowners tend to set it at 140. Here are our water heater repairs and replacement recommendations to avoid dangers in your home.

  1. What Types Of Hot Water Heaters Are There?

Water heaters are available in electric and gas. Electric water heaters have coils that are activated by a thermostat. Gas water heaters have a pilot light and burner at the bottom of the tank. Once the water heats to a set temperature, it returns to the pilot light flame until the water drops below the pre-set value (recommended 120 degrees).

  1. Can A Hot Water Heater Explode?

Yes! A hot water heater can explode under certain conditions, which is why we strongly recommend having an annual check-up to avoid serious complications. A water heater can explode if the pressure builds and the unit does not cut off or the safety devices in the unit fail. It can also explode if there is an undetected gas leak.

  1. Which Parts May Need A Repair Or Replacement?

Each part of your hot water heater plays a pivotal roll in your home’s comfort and safety. Here are the critical parts that may require a plumbing repair or replacement.

  • Dip tubes are located at the top of the water heater and dispense water into the tank. If the dip tube breaks or malfunctions, the water won’t heat correctly. It may also cause serious damage to other parts that will require replacements.
  • Pipes bring water in and out of a hot water heater. Materials generally can include copper, CPVC, Polyethylene (PEX or PP-R), or polybutylene (PB). While copper tends to be more popular, CPVC is commonly used because it is easier to flex during installation and can withstand 200-degrees of heat.
  • A drain valve is located at a tank’s bottom. This is usually the issue when you hear loud banging noises because of the minerals in the water that cause corrosion. It’s important to have an annual flush to remove any build-up. This not only keeps your family safe but it helps extend the shelf-life of the unit.
  • The pressure relief valve is a safety mechanism near the top of the hot water heater. It is a critical component as it’s primary function is to relieve building pressure when the tank exceeds the set temperature. If you notice the water heater is leaking, you need to replace the valve to avoid a flood or explosion. It also has a discharge tube attacked to prevent hot water from causing injury.
  • The anode rod is a safety feature that attracts corrosive-causing minerals. It protects a hot water heater from deterioration after a large deposit build-up.
