The winter around these parts can be brutal. And we know that under these circumstances, any bit of warmth is appreciated. So, what can you do to stay warm this winter?
Consider installing a programmable thermostat. Instead of manually adjusting the temperature when you leave the house or go to sleep, this system will do it for you! This means that your house will always be at the optimal setting for the time of day, thus avoiding high charges and discomfort from enduring the wrong temperature.
Sometimes the problem is just the way your furniture is set up. If anything is covering or blocking your radiator or your vents, you are missing out on a great deal of heat! In particular, if something heavy such as your couch or bookcase is blocking it, this may prevent your heat from circulating properly. Do not dry clothes on your heater either! Make sure that it is clear and providing the maximal amount of coziness.
A major element in how well your heating system works is the level of insulation in your home. Around 25% of heat escapes through the roof. Therefore, good insulation there can solve a lot of your problems. Meanwhile, your walls may account for around a third of heat loss. Sometimes it may be worth it to upgrade the insulation there as well. You may also find “air leaks” on the walls. Aside from the obvious culprits, such as windows and doors, there could be others. Pay attention to your attics, basements, and kitchen vents. You can seal these leaks with some easy caulking. Meanwhile, floors can account for around 10% of your heat loss. If this is a problem, consider using rugs and carpets extensively. They work!
Don’t forget to insulate your boiler as well. This will provide you with more reliable hot water and save you a significant amount on energy costs.
Let the sun do its work as well. Even in winter the sun still provides warmth. Open the curtains in the sunniest parts of your home, so that those areas absorb warmth. However, make sure to close them at night. Once the sun goes down, all your window panes are letting in is the chill in the air. Consider getting insulated curtains to prevent that from happening.
